A walkthrough for getting up and running with Python on the N900:
http://www.stochasticgeometry.ie/2010/04/29/python-on-the-nokia-n900/

It took only 27 minutes to get from absolutely nothing to running the first HelloWorld.py on the phone. It did take the rest of the afternoon to install the full dev environment (including the emulated N900 used for testing), but mostly that was waiting on downloads. There's only one real technical hitch, and that only affects 64-bit platforms (and yes, the walkthrough has the fix documented in it).
Hope it helps...

Well, I finally got my device yesterday. I have not played with it a lot, but so far I am very impressed all around. The music quality is better than I had anticipated. But yes, the media player is a bit unintuitive, to say the least. But, for the moment, I can live with it. It does recognized the playlists that I had already created on the desktop, so that helps.

As far as the alternative media players that I mentioned, it seems that they are still in the testing phase. I have read some good reports about some of them, but at the moment I don't have links handy. You could try some of them if you are desperate by using the <a href="http://www.themaemo.com/taking-the-red-pill/" rel="nofollow">Red Pill</a> method that was posted on this site. However, I personally would not recommend it due to the potential problems it could cause. However, if you do your homework well before installing an app you may find that the risk is minimal in that particular instance. Make sure to find out if the app is already "optified" (configured so that it doesn't take gobs of room in your very limited N900 root partition), if not just be a little patient or try to find another app.

One other thing you may want to try is the path described on this link: <a href="http://pankajsays.blogspot.com/2009/12/how-to-sync-nokia-n900-media-player.html" rel="nofollow">http://pankajsays.blogspot.com/2009/12/how-to-sync-nokia-n900-media-player.html</a>

Finally, keep in mind that the built in media player will very likely receive some improvements soon by means of a firmware upgrade. In fact, there is reportedly one already being <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/12/25/nokia-n900-firmware-update-pr11/" rel="nofollow">tested</a>.

"Nevertheless, it is good to note that there are other media players available for the N900 that do offer some of these features and that may be a better fit for some users."
Can you point me to some links of music players that I can download for my N900? I am one of those for whom the built in player was not intuitive. Thanks.

It's funny how you people complain about everything being to expensive while we here in Europe have to deal with 1.5 - 2 times higher prices for the same thing!
On Nokia US site the N900 is $550,
Nokia UK site: £500($810)

Also N900 is $550 just released brand new price and Unlocked. Don't compare it to a smartphone that's subsidized by a network and with a 2 year contract...
