my friend has an iphone and is getting the 3g for christmas. i was wondering if i bought the old iphone from him with no sim card, would i still be able to use it as a regular ipod? he said that it would lock up with no sim card in it. if this is true is there any way to unlock it?

Fully agree with your statement about developers and Maemo, assuming that you’re talking about Open Source development. It’s one of the things that got me really excited about the platform.

If you’re talking about commercial development, it’s worth noting that small developers are pretty much hosed unless they want to incorporate and run a business.

Well, it is still too early to tell how that situation that you brought up (and thank you for doing so) will be resolved. But, one of the great things about Maemo is that Ovi does not have to be the only source for selling closed source apps. I have no doubt that things will be OK in that regard.
